Well Checkups, Medical Grooming and Annual Exams

Since we expanded our practice in 2013, Bracken Ridge Veterinary Hospital has been your go-to vet for routine exotic animal care and medical grooming throughout all of south-central Pennsylvania. An annual head-to-toe (or tail feather) examination is an essential part of keeping your exotic friend happy, healthy – and parasite-free – so your entire family can stay well.

A regular wellness checkup and health assessment helps ensure any developing issues with your exotic pet are identified promptly so any illness or disease can be treated early – when treatment and interventions are most likely to be successful. While most exotic pets are scheduled for an annual wellness exam, geriatric pets and some short-lived species (such as rats and small birds) may benefit from semi-annual exams. Medical grooming services are also available to help keep your bird or exotic pet comfortable while helping to prevent injury.

New Pet and Booster Immunizations

Exotic animals are vulnerable to many of the same diseases that affect domestic animals – and several of these diseases are zoonotic (they can be transmitted to humans). In addition, airborne diseases such as distemper can be introduced into your home by hitching a ride on your shoes, clothing, or even a bag of pet food, so these diseases can easily infect strictly indoor pets. Protect your exotic pet from diseases such as rabies, distemper, and other illnesses for which there is no reliable cure with a custom infectious disease testing and immunization schedule. Our disease management plans are tailored to address your pet’s specific needs, housing, and lifestyle. If your pet would happen to scratch or bite someone and you cannot produce a certificate of rabies vaccination, euthanization could be ordered by a court (in order to have your pet tested). Don’t let that happen to your pet! Be sure to have your exotic friend immunized as soon as possible.

Full In-House Laboratory and Blood Machine

Your exotic pet can enjoy all the benefits of our state-of-the-art medical facility. As a patient of Bracken Ridge Veterinary Hospital, he can access our full laboratory with blood and fecal analysis capabilities, bacterial and fungal cultures, and gram stains, as well as urinalysis, cytology, and an in-house blood machine. Through our partnerships with top universities, specialty testing is also available for an extensive range of conditions. Our advanced laboratory capabilities and on-site blood machine enable prompt diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of acute and chronic illnesses, infections, diseases, and medical conditions so your exotic pet can achieve optimal wellness and a long, happy, and healthy life.

Routine Annual Bloodwork for Exotic Pets

Birds and exotic animals are experts at hiding signs of illness that could make them a target of predators in their natural environment. Routine annual bloodwork is essential to develop baseline data and uncover any issues before they develop into a serious problem for your pet. Preventing disease is much more cost-effective than treatment, so do your pet a favor and be sure to schedule his routine annual bloodwork today.

Flea, Tick, Mite, Worm, and Parasite Control

Internal and external parasite management is an essential component of a total wellness plan for your birds or exotic pet. It is important to keep in mind that most parasites can also infect your other pets, as well as you and your family. Your pet should be tested when you first bring him home, as well as on an annual basis, and if you suspect that he may be infected with fleas, ticks, worms, mites, ringtail, coccidiosis, Encephalitazoon Cuniculi, or other parasites. Some signs to watch for include diarrhea, scratching, fur/feather loss, skin irritation, apathy, an enlarged abdomen, visible parasites/larvae/eggs, weight loss, vocalization, and a general poor appearance. Safe, effective treatments are available to help keep your avian or exotic pet – and by extension, your entire family – healthy and free of parasites.
